In Autumn 2018, an assessment item specifically focussed on Indigenous Competencies and engaging with the FASS Indigenous Graduate Attribute was trialled in the 3rd year Digital and Social Media subject Digital Publishing for Apps, within the undergraduate Communications degree in FASS. This subject focusses on issues and approaches to app development, and in this case an existing case study assessment item was reframed as a case study of an Indigenous mobile app, embedding students Indigenous competencies and understanding of Indigenous culture within a professional, applied context – in this instance, digital media and app development.

 

FASS staff Megan Heyward and Natalie Krikowa worked with Prof. Susan Page (CAIK) and Alice McAuliffe (UTS ART) to share resources and develop learning materials and activities to support this item, including Indigenous Art tours on campus, an extended list of Indigenous mobile apps, in-class scenario activities and a detailed unpacking of the UTS Design Index Principles and Protocols Guidelines document for engaging sensitively with Indigenous organisations, people and contents.

 

These materials and activities provided a framework for students to approach Indigenous contents and competencies within a professional, applied context. Students as well as staff – Megan, Natalie and our third tutor, Peter Wildman – were highly engaged with the item, and the resulting student case studies were impressive, demonstrating strong understanding and engagement with Indigenous contents, principles and protocols. Student SFS feedback has also been impressive, both overall and in relation to Indigenous competencies.

 

This joint presentation by Megan Heyward, Natalie Krikowa and Alice McAuliffe will cover the scope of the item, the detailed strategies and class materials developed to support it, and a selection of student outcomes, to demonstrate how the FASS Indigenous Graduate Attribute on Indigenous competencies can be embedded and framed within a professional, production context in an undergraduate Communication subject.
